Abstract: [Objective] With the implementation of China’s manufacturing power strategy, society has put forward higher requirements for the cultivation of mechanical graduate students, and scientific research innovation ability is an important indicator to measure the quality of mechanical graduate education. [Method] The research group aims to cultivate the innovation ability of graduate students. Based on the positioning of Suzhou University of Science and Technology and the characteristics of the mechanical engineering discipline, it analyzes the main problems that need to be addressed in cultivating the innovation ability of mechanical graduate students, such as unclear goals, unreasonable curriculum system, insufficient scientific research innovation ability, and imperfect training and assessment mechanisms. The research group elaborate on Suzhou University of Science and Technology’s continuous exploration of ways to cultivate graduate students’ innovation ability in recent years: focusing on cultivating morality and talents, using classroom ideological and political education as a carrier, and conducting comprehensive education on graduate students’ patriotism and responsibility. Follow up on the latest developments in the mechanical engineering industry, update the course system in a timely manner, optimize course content, and reform teaching models. Guided by national needs, taking solving the “bottleneck” problem as our own responsibility, and cultivating innovative abilities in practical combat. Deepen the integration of industry and education in collaborative education, improve the quality assurance system for graduate students, and strengthen process management. [Result] Through continuous practice, Suzhou University of Science and Technology has achieved significant results in ideological and political education. The role of a new force in scientific research has gradually emerged, and the quality and innovation ability of mechanical graduate students have steadily improved, with outstanding scientific research achievements.
